Tata Motors outperforms key rivals in September and logs impressive numbers even for the third quarter of the calendar year
September 2025 was a month of several new records for Tata Motors, one of India’s top 5 carmakers. The company outranked Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai, becoming India’s second-largest carmaker.
Tata Motors sold 59,667 cars in India in September 2025, which, compared to 41,063 units sold in the same month last year, marked a 45% growth. For the record, Mahindra & Mahindra stood at 56,233 units and Hyundai was further behind, at 51,547 units. That said, while the rivals exported 2,481 units and 18,800 units, respectively, Tata Motors shipped just 1,240 cars to international markets. Although exports aren’t a major contributor to its sales, their share has significantly improved.
In September last year, Tata Motors had sold a total of 41,313 cars, including 41,063 units in the domestic market and 250 units overseas. Thus, its international sales were just 0.6% of the total volume. In September this year, exports accounted for 2.0% of the company’s total sales, which were at a new all-time high of 60,907 units. Compared to September 2024, the homegrown carmaker recorded an increase of 19,594 units or 47% in its passenger car sales, including both domestic shipments and exports.

Domestic and export volumes combined, the company shipped 144,397 cars in Q3 2025, 10% more than in Q3 2024 (130,753 units).
The Nexon was Tata Motors’ most popular car in September 2025. The company sold more than 22,500 units of the small SUV last month – the highest-ever for any of its cars in a single month. Eco-friendly models were particularly in high demand last month. EV sales, including those in export markets, grew by 96% year-over-year – 9,191 units (September 2024: 4,680 units).

Thanks to the GST cuts and the onset of the peak period of the festive season, Tata Motors has a strong booking pipeline. Plus, with new major launches like the new Tata Punch (facelift) and the petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari lined up, the October-December quarter should be even better.
