Festive Season & GST 2.0 Spark Strong Turnaround In Sep 2025 Auto Sales

GaadiWaadi –

Total auto sales in September 2025 climbed to 18,27,337 units with a healthy 5.22 per cent growth over 17,36,760 units sold a year ago

After a relatively flat start to the month, India’s auto retail sector roared back to life in September 2025 with total vehicle sales climbing to 18,27,337 units – enduring a 5.22 per cent volume growth over 17,36,760 units sold a year ago. The rebound came once the GST 2.0 reforms kicked in midway through the month – just as festive buying sentiment started gathering pace across markets.

Customer enquiries, which had been sluggish for most of the first three weeks, shot up dramatically when Navratri festivities began on September 22. The combination of GST 2.0 tax relaxation resulting in huge price drops, OEM-led added discounts and improved financing options provided the perfect recipe for a late sales surge.

Breaking down the numbers, two-wheelers once again led the charts, clocking 12,87,735 units in September – up 6.5 per cent year-on-year. Passenger vehicle demand followed closely – rising 5.8 per cent to 2,99,369 units. The tractor category recorded a total of 64,785 units last month with a 3.6 per cent jump – indicating healthy agricultural income post-monsoon and the impact of early harvest-related purchases.

Commercial vehicles showed a measured gain of 2.6 per cent – reaching 72,124 units. However, the three-wheeler space witnessed a 7.2 per cent drop to 98,866 units. Construction equipment too took a hit with a steep 19 per cent year-on-year fall to just 4,458 unit sales in September 2025 in the domestic market.

Interestingly, inventory levels for passenger vehicles have now risen to nearly 60 days – a sign of deliberate stock build-up by manufacturers ahead of Diwali. The industry expects smoother deliveries and shorter waiting periods for popular models in the weeks ahead as the remaining months of this calendar year will also more likely witness high demand.

With October underway, the momentum is expected to sustain through the festive stretch and new launches are also in the pipeline. For instance, the next-gen Hyundai Venue will arrive early next month while the Skoda Octavia RS will launch in just over a week’s time. More manufacturers are also waiting to bring in new models across different segments.
