The JDM-spec 2026 Suzuki Jimny kei car gets feature additions including a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with connectivity tech

The Suzuki Jimny was first introduced in 1970 with the LJ10, a small, lightweight 4×4 powered by a 359 cc two-stroke engine. It was Japan’s first mass-produced mini off-roader and featured a ladder-frame chassis and selectable four-wheel drive. The LJ series evolved through the 1970s, eventually replaced by the SJ series in 1981, which gained a larger 1.0-litre engine and became known globally as the Suzuki Samurai.

The model’s compact size and strong off-road performance earned it popularity in international markets. In 1998, Suzuki launched the third generation Jimny with a more new design, coil-spring suspension and improved safety features. The fourth-gen Jimny arrived in 2018 with a retro-inspired, boxy design and a 1.5-litre petrol engine while the five-door version made its debut in 2023.

Suzuki’s evergreen Jimny has just received a light round of updates in Japan. These updates are exclusive to the three-door model as the longer five-door Jimny Nomade is relatively new. On the outside, Suzuki has barely touched the design and for good reason. The Jimny’s instantly recognisable boxy silhouette continues to turn heads with its simplicity and old-school attitude.

Both the regular and narrow-body kei variants carry forward their distinct proportions. The kei-spec model, made to comply with Japan’s compact car regulations, skips the wider fenders seen on the global-spec Jimny Sierra. It also gains a unique pair of small sub-mirrors mounted under the regular mirrors to help minimise blind spots.

The analogue instrument cluster now houses a new 4.2-inch colour display between the dials in the updated off-road machine. A new 9-inch touchscreen system replaces the older infotainment unit on higher trims bringing improved connectivity. Lower variants, however, continue with the familiar plastic dashboard layout.

In terms of safety, it matches its five-door sibling with features like Dual Sensor Brake Support II, lane departure prevention, automatic high beams and road sign recognition. Automatic variants also benefit from adaptive cruise control and rear false start prevention. Suzuki has even integrated stronger cybersecurity measures to comply with the latest Japanese automotive regulations.

Under the skin, Suzuki has decided not to alter what already works. The kei version continues to be powered by a 658 cc turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine making 63 hp while the Jimny Sierra retains its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 103 hp. Transmission choices remain a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic – coupled with the brand’s part-time 4WD system.

The refreshed Jimny has already gone on sale in Japan, with prices starting at ¥1,918,400 (around Rs. 11.18 lakh) for the narrow-body variant and going up to ¥2,385,900 (approximately Rs. 13.91 lakh) for the Jimny Sierra. The optional 9-inch touchscreen adds ¥128,700 (around Rs. 75,000) to the bill.
