Toyota Land Cruiser FJ uses the same platform and engine option as the Fortuner which is heavily localised in India
Toyota’s all-new Land Cruiser FJ might look like a compact off-roader designed to recapture the charm of its classic forebears but beneath that modern styling lies a familiar heart. The FJ shares much of its underpinnings with the Toyota Fortuner – one of the brand’s most popular SUVs across Asian and emerging markets.
Both SUVs utilise Toyota’s tried-and-tested IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) ladder frame platform, the same robust architecture that also underpins the Hilux pickup and certain versions of the Innova. The shared architecture is what gives both vehicles their characteristic durability, towing capability and off-road prowess.
Under the bonnet, the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE four-cylinder petrol engine is another major common link. In the new Land Cruiser FJ, this naturally aspirated unit produces around 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque. The Fortuner’s version of the same motor develops almost the same performance. Both are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system, making them mechanically near-identical as well.

While the Fortuner offers more powertrains including a 2.8-litre turbo GD diesel engine that pushes 204 PS and up to 500 Nm along with a mild-hybrid diesel option, the Land Cruiser FJ sticks to the single petrol engine for now. The suspension setup too mirrors that of the Fortuner too, featuring double-wishbones at the front and a 4-link coil spring arrangement at the rear.
Both models also roll out of Toyota’s key manufacturing hubs in Thailand which serve as the main export base for IMV platform based vehicles and the brand has confirmed that the Land Cruiser FJ will be sold only in select Southeast Asian and emerging markets. This opens up a possibility of its future arrival in countries like India as it could be positioned slightly below the Fortuner.

The Land Cruiser FJ is dimensionally smaller than the Fortuner but it is taller with a boxier design. Measuring 4,575 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,960 mm tall, the FJ is approximately 220 mm shorter in length than the Fortuner which comes in at 4,795 mm. The Land Cruiser FJ’s wheelbase is also significantly shorter at 2,580 mm, compared to the Fortuner’s 2,745 mm. However, the FJ’s height of 1,960 mm makes it 125 mm taller than the Fortuner.
