New Tata Sierra will be available in ICE and electric guises and it will take on rivals in the hotly contested midsize SUV segment
Tata Motors has been putting the upcoming Sierra through extensive road testing for months. Once seen in concept form and later unveiled in its near-production avatar, the reborn Sierra is among the brand’s most eagerly awaited SUVs. True to Tata’s latest product strategy, the model will be offered in both internal combustion and all-electric versions.
Both could be introduced before the end of this year but no official confirmation has been made yet. The revival of the Sierra badge carries significant weight for Tata – especially at a time when the Curvv has managed only fair sales and hasn’t yet unsettled its established rivals. With the Sierra, Tata will be aiming straight at the heart of the midsize SUV crowd.
It will take on the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and a few others including the forthcoming Renault Duster and Nissan Tekton. The electric version of the Sierra will more likely be introduced before its petrol and diesel counterparts.

Interestingly, Tata Motors isn’t planning major visual deviations between the EV and ICE iterations – both will share a cohesive, near-identical design. Expect an upright front fascia with a signature grille panel, slim LED headlamps connected by a full-width light bar, sculpted bumpers with sharp detailing and a clean rear section highlighted by a slender LED tail strip.
Powering the internal combustion version of the new Tata Sierra will likely be a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine producing 168 PS and 280 Nm of torque. Alongside it, Tata is expected to offer the familiar 2.0-litre diesel engine tuned for about 170 PS and 350 Nm. Both engines will be paired with a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes.

The features list will comprise a triple screen layout with a central touchscreen, a driver’s display and a front passenger screen, Level 2 ADAS system, a 360-degree camera unit, ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, powered driver seat, drive modes, a flat-bottom steering wheel with illuminated logo, star-shaped alloy wheels and so on.
The electric version, on the other hand, will likely have a lot in common with the Harrier EV as it will be available with two battery options. Whether a dual motor setup will be provided or not is yet to be divulged but expect the claimed range to be over 500 km.
