The much-awaited Tata Sierra SUV is all set to hit Indian roads in the coming weeks, although its official launch date is yet to be announced. Tata Motors is betting big on the Sierra, especially after the Curvv failed its make in the midsize SUV, which is currently dominated by the Hyundai Creta. The Maruti Victoris and Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Toyota Hyryder and Honda Elevate are its key contenders in this segment.
Multi-Powertrain Strategy
Aiming to position the Sierra strongly against all its competitors, Tata Motors will offer the SUV with three engine options – petrol, diesel and electric. While the official specifications are yet to be revealed, the Tata Sierra EV is likely to borrow powertrains from the Harrier EV.
The diesel version is expected to use the Harrier-sourced 2.0L Kryotec engine that’s good enough for 170bhp and 350Nm. According to media reports, the Sierra petrol will initially be offered with an all-new 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, helping Tata achieve a more competitive starting price. The more powerful 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine, showcased at the Auto Expo, will be introduced at a later stage. This four-cylinder motor generates a maximum power of 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm.
Transmission choices are expected to include both manual and automatic gearbox. The AWD (all-wheel drive) system might be reserved for the higher variants, and the SUV will likely to offer multiple drive options.
